My first (but definitely not the last) fretless bass and I love it!
This is my fourth Harley Benton bass from the “Progressive” series: I have had two six-stringed and one five-stringed before and I loved them all for their playability, a wide range of tones, and, last but not least the looks. This one is my first fretless bass and man, I love it!
Being self-taught and lacking basic musical education, I was a little bit hesitant to pull the trigger on this one. Yet, to my great surprise and even greater joy, I was able to play it right after plugging it in. Sure, I still have a whole lot to learn, but the pleasure of this sweet, soft, buttery tone is incredibly rewarding. I find myself using it in genres entirely different from the ones I had initially planned to use it in, just for the pure joy of playing without the frets. So if you are like me, and want to try out a fretless – do it!
Apart from that I do not have much to add. The instrument arrived in perfect condition, as always the packaging at Thoman proved to be solid. The setup (action, intonation, neck curvature) was great out of the box. I might lower the action a bit and probably switch to a tape-wound set of strings but that’s it.
Oh, and no sharp fret edges on this one, if you get my joke…
