Don't try these at home
The price seems to dictate that you can't go wrong. Not quite.
My secondhand Pbass needed new strings as the D was dead. The others still produced that typical growl and punch of a P-style..
Putting these on gives a very clear, bright sound where the trebles overpower the mids. The bass has no presence. It's a very one-dimensional and mechanical sound. It lacks character and it is very one-dimensional. What's more: it takes away the character of your instrument. I cannot even begin to imagine what these would do to a Jbass.
Different amp settings offer very little relief. Overdrive and gain get them to work. Which is not an area where I want to go.
The silk retro-looking orange windings are to short; on the G the metal touches the post of the tuner with increased risk of breakage. On the other end was the silk on the D too long; you don't want to have that as it dampens the string. Had too peel that back.
I suppose that if your sound comes from your amp (metal?) these will work, if it comes from your instrument, look for something else.
After a few hours of play the brightness starts to wear off a little, which in this case is a pro. The overpowering highs are going, but it stays very mechanical. As hanging wire for paintings they turn out to be great.
Pros:
- price
Cons:
- liveless, characterless and mechanical sounding
- silk winding not up to parr
